We don’t like saying things just for the sake of it, so when we say that the Gran Hotel Inglés is an exceptional establishment, we do so with good reason. This hotel, which dates back to 1886, is the oldest hotel in Madrid, and its walls have witnessed over 130 years of history. In fact, back in the day, it was only the second building in Madrid to be fitted with its own electric lighting.
Its proximity to the Puerta del Sol and the Spanish Parliament was strategic to the hotel’s standing, and naturally, many illustrious figures from Spain’s cultural and political circles frequented the hotel. It also welcomed a great many musicians, bullfighters, literati and national and international painters who stayed at the Gran Hotel Inglés. Valle-Inclán, Matisse, and Virginia Wolf are just a few of the great names on this list. The Restaurante Inglés also gradually made a name for itself and become a favourite venue for the finest cultural, social and political events that took place in Madrid in the early 20th Century.
Following a major restoration project that lasted 2 years, the Gran Hotel Inglés was resurrected in 2018 as a 5-star boutique hotel that combines elegance and sophistication with 21st Century comfort and technology, without sacrificing a single drop of its old-world charm.

The hotel has not lost its early 20thCentury essence, and the design is present in the every last feature of the décor. "The customer service is outstanding, from the first to the last employee, they make you feel special and offer the most personalised service we have ever received. For example, even though there are dozens of different cocktails on the menu, the barman offered to mix me up a customised cocktail to suit my personal tastes. I’ve never seen anything like it! And he was absolutely spot on; it was delicious. The reception and concierge staff were also very friendly, always willing to help and offer a genuine smile.”
